I want to acknowledge how frustrating and difficult it has been not knowing exactly how to exactly help. Especially during the past couple weeks with the announcement by SCAF Security Council of Armed Forces declaring control of the country and stripping the first freely elected president of our history of the majority of his power. There was little hope in the past week and skepticism of our electoral process on who was going to be chosen to win. I want to tell you that having hope is 50% of the battle….I am not happy or excited about how these elections have been handled nor the outcome but I am relieved that at least the old regime did not “formally” win. If the foundation is still the same, corrupt and controlling, then how can we feel celebratory? It felt like it did not even matter who was chosen president at this point since the SCAF will still ultimately will be in charge…To say, we, Egypt have become a democracy is not only false but an insult to our intelligence, it is an illusion. We must continue to call out hypocrisies and lies to keep our country in check. I don’t want any these disappointments to take the fact that we still have taken a big step forward even though it may not feel like it to some of us. There is a collective shift in consciousness that happened in Egypt. That alone is a magnificent feat. I am especially proud of the Egyptian revolutionaries for enduring all that they have gone through. I send them strength and patience. We must continue to work forward in whatever way that we can.
Sonia Hassan, CIOGC Press Conference

“This is a victory of the people against all odds, victory of the future over outdated paradigms and victory of civic engagement over conspiracy theory. For us in the U.S, we have an important election coming up. CIOGC has already started our voter registration campaign. CIOGC will be hiring three fellows who will work within our organizations for voter registration and Get Out to Vote Campaign. I urge you to help them in the elections.
